Liard River
The Liard River is an 1115 kilometre long left tributary of the Mackenzie River in Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories, and the province of British Columbia. The Liard River is a whitewater class 1-2 river, so it was well suited for us as beginners. The approximately 230 km trip on the river took 10 days in very changeable weather. Crossing the Canadian wilderness on a river was a great experience.
Kluane Wilderness Trekking
This trekking took place in the challenging terrain of the Kluane National Park without any marked trails and infrastructure. A short flight brought us from Whitehorse to Bighorn Lake, the starting point of a couple of day hikes to the surrounding wilderness. In 5 days of trekking back to the Alaska Highway, we crossed several whitewater streams and had to pass two mountain ridges. Besides personal material, everyone carried part of the camping equipment and food. We started with a backpack weighing approximately 25 kg. Despite the great effort, this trekking was a fascinating insight into largely untouched nature.
